Makeup Primer Types — Which One Do You Need?
- Pore-Blurring Primer: Fills and blurs enlarged pores and fine lines — creates a smooth, filtered canvas. Contains silicones (Dimethicone) or Silica for a silky, blurred effect
- Mattifying Primer: Controls oil production and absorbs shine — significantly extends foundation wear in Malaysia's heat and humidity. Contains Zinc Oxide, Silica, or Kaolin
- Hydrating Primer: Adds moisture beneath foundation — prevents dry and combination skin from looking patchy or cakey. Contains Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, or Aloe Vera
- Colour-Correcting Primer: Tinted primers that neutralise specific concerns across the face — green for redness, peach for dullness, lavender for sallowness
- SPF Primer: Combines primer with sun protection — useful as a baseline but should not replace a dedicated SPF
- Grip Primer: Creates a tacky base that helps foundation and eye products adhere for maximum staying power
How to Apply Primer Correctly
- Apply after moisturiser and SPF, before foundation — allow each layer to fully absorb first
- Use a pea-sized amount only — more primer causes foundation to pill or slide off
- Press and roll with clean fingertips — this pushes primer into pores rather than over them
- Wait 60–90 seconds for primer to set before applying foundation — the most commonly skipped step for longevity
- For Malaysia's humidity: always use a mattifying or grip primer in the T-zone even if using a hydrating primer on the rest of the face
